A new year means a faster rate of change for content marketers. In an industry where consistency means a complacent audience, Forbes’ contributor and SEO expert, Jayson DeMers, lists the five developing technologies to watch out for in this year of content marketing.
Virtual and Augmented Reality
As videos become more easily produced, more available, and ultimately, in higher consumer demand, there is a very real possibility that once VR enters the content world, it will be here to stay. Oculus, owned by Facebook, is currently ruling the virtual reality industry. The company has already released some Samsung gear, and is set to release the full version of Oculus Rift this spring. Oculus Rift, as said by Oculus, will make VR a mainstream outlet for content consumption.
Instant articles aren’t new to 2016, but are still fresh on the scene. In theory, instant articles, which can be accessed within an app, without pointing consumers to an outside site, are said to benefit readers and publishers. But, if their popularity continues to grow, instant articles could force marketers to re-think how they get new content to users.
Another not-so-new, but on the rise trend, social purchasing’s success on sites like Facebook and Pinterest, means there will be many more social purchasing opportunities in the future. As social purchasing crowds social media outlets, pushing organic visibility opportunities to the wayside, marketers will need to find new ways to reach the social media audience.
Live Streaming Improvement
Live streaming apps like Periscope, Meerkat, and Twitch, have drastically improved the quality of live streaming over the past year. Mainstream social media outlets, like Facebook, are in the process of developing their own live stream features, which means live streaming will be much more accessible, and live content more readily available. Live streaming’s looming popularity will put pressure on content marketers to create more live, and less pre-planned, material.
DeMers looks to Google RankBrain as the future of search algorithm updates. As humans become almost obsolete in search updates, content marketers may find it much more challenging to find a working formula for organic search visibility.
